How to Care for a Sauna Hat So It Keeps Its Shape and Lasts Longer
How to care for a sauna hat so that it stays clean, comfortable and keeps its shape even after many sauna sessions? This is a natural continuation of our sauna guide. Earlier, we explored why your head can overheat in the sauna. Now it is time for the next step: learning how to look after the hat you have chosen.
A sauna hat regularly comes into contact with sweat, moisture, heat and sometimes sauna aromas or leaves from a sauna whisk. If it is simply left in a closed bag after the sauna or washed in water that is too hot, the material may felt, shrink, stretch or lose its shape. The good news is that proper care is not complicated. It begins with identifying the material and following the manufacturer’s instructions.
First, check what the hat is made of
Sauna hats that look similar can be made from very different materials: wool felt, a wool blend, synthetic felt, linen or another textile. The fibre composition determines which washing and drying methods the hat can tolerate.
The most important rule is simple: always check the care label or product instructions before washing. If the label permits hand washing only, do not replace it with a standard washing-machine cycle. If the care information is no longer available, gentle hand washing is safer than experimenting with hot water, a strong spin cycle or a tumble dryer.
If you are still choosing a suitable model, compare shapes, colours and designs in our sauna hat category.
What should you do immediately after every sauna session?
The biggest care mistake often happens not on wash day, but immediately after the sauna. A damp hat should not be crumpled up and left in a closed bag until the next visit.
- Shake out the hat. Remove any attached leaves and small pieces of debris.
- Air it. Place the hat in a well-ventilated area so the moisture can evaporate.
- Restore its shape. Gently smooth the brim and crown with your hands.
- Let it dry completely. Put the hat in a cupboard, on a shelf or in your sauna bag only when it is fully dry.
Wool naturally resists the build-up of unpleasant odours, and careful airing is often enough to refresh it. This is also highlighted by the International Wool Textile Organisation. This does not mean that a hat never needs washing. Wash it when there is visible dirt, a stain or an odour that airing no longer removes.
How should you wash a wool or wool-felt sauna hat?
If the manufacturer allows hand washing, use clean lukewarm water and a mild detergent suitable for wool. Woolmark’s wool-care guidance recommends water at about 30 °C and a gentle detergent for hand washing. However, the label on the specific hat always takes priority over general advice.
- Fill a bowl with lukewarm, not hot, water.
- Add a small amount of mild detergent.
- Immerse the hat and press it gently in the water. Do not scrub, rub or twist the material.
- Rinse thoroughly in water of a similar temperature so that a sudden temperature change does not affect the fibres.
- Carefully press out excess water with your palms without wringing the hat.
Wool fibres can felt and change size when exposed to heat, friction and mechanical movement. Aggressive rubbing, very hot water and a powerful spin cycle are therefore not a safe default choice.
Can a sauna hat be washed in a washing machine?
Only when the care label clearly says that it can. Some wool products may be washed on a wool or delicate cycle, but that does not mean every felt hat can be treated in this way. A firmly shaped hat, decorative appliqués, embroidery and combinations of several materials may all require especially gentle care.
If there is no label or the information is unclear, choose hand washing. Saving a few minutes is not worth turning a good hat one size smaller or ruining its silhouette after a single cycle.
How should you dry a sauna hat?
After washing, gently return the hat to its original shape. A clean towel can be used to absorb excess moisture, but never wring the hat.
Let it dry naturally in a well-ventilated place, away from the sauna heater, radiators and other intense sources of heat. Do not put a damp hat on a very hot surface and do not use a tumble dryer unless the manufacturer expressly allows it. Drying too quickly may alter the shape and size.
A hanging loop is convenient for everyday airing. However, a freshly washed, heavy and wet hat may be better dried in a supported shape so its own weight does not stretch the material.
What should you do about stains and odours?
Try treating a small stain locally first, using a clean damp cloth and a little mild detergent. Strong bleach, aggressive stain removers and heavily scented products are generally poor choices for a sauna hat. They can damage the colour or fibres, while a powerful fragrance may become uncomfortable in the heat.
Do not drip essential oil directly onto the hat. Concentrated oil may leave a mark, and its aroma may remain longer than you want. Use aromas only as intended; learn more in our guide “How to choose the best scent for a sauna?”.
How should you store the hat between sauna visits?
Before long-term storage, make sure that the hat is clean and completely dry. Keep it in a dry, ventilated place where it will not be crushed under other objects. If it remains tightly folded in a sauna bag for several weeks, the creases may become difficult to smooth out.
Protection from textile pests also matters during long storage. IWTO recommends cleaning woollen items before putting them away. In practical terms: do not leave the hat damp, dirty or together with whisk leaves in a closed box.
Seven mistakes that shorten the life of a sauna hat
- leaving a damp hat in a closed bag;
- washing it in very hot water;
- scrubbing or brushing it vigorously;
- wringing the hat to remove water more quickly;
- drying it directly on a radiator or beside the sauna heater;
- using a washing machine or tumble dryer without permission on the label;
- storing it crushed or before it is completely dry.
Sauna-hat care is part of the whole sauna ritual
In “What to bring to the sauna for your first time?”, we included a sauna hat among the essential items. In our guide to the right sauna temperature and humidity, we explained that comfort is created not by one number but by the whole environment and by how you feel.
Caring for the hat is part of the same system. A well-chosen hat helps you feel more comfortable in the heat, while proper care lets it retain its shape, cleanliness and appearance for longer. Air it after the sauna, wash it only according to the material and label, dry it gently and store it without crushing it.
